The RAI Institute Welcomes Shell as its Newest Member

Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies with more than 90,000 employees in more than 70 countries. They use advanced technologies and take an innovative approach to help build a sustainable energy future.

Shell views AI as a critical enabler for the energy transition, playing a key role in reducing the carbon footprint of current operations through efficiency; enabling the future (intermittent) energy mix through forecasting and optimisation; speeding up the R&D and design process, from molecules to windfarms; and measuring progress using computer vision with satellite imagery and to monitor leaks. Shell’s digital teams cover expertise in a range of cutting-edge AI techniques, from machine learning to computer vision, deep learning to virtual assistants, and including related technologies such as Internet of Things, augmented and virtual reality, and blockchain.

Given the importance of AI and other digital technologies to the energy transition, Shell’s digitalisation leadership has prioritised developing an approach to responsible and ethical AI, underpinned by Shell’s core values of honesty, integrity, and respect for people. With the EU AI Act expected to be finalised end 2023 and, with compliance required within two years, Shell is working towards embedding this into practices and systems. “Shell is looking forward to working with RAI Institute to ensure compliance with regulations across different countries and regions, and to ensure that this is embedded in everything they do.” – Amy Challen, General Manager – Artificial Intelligence, Shell.

“Shell is building upon its tradition of engineering excellence, emphasis on sustainability, and history of addressing complex global challenges to show leadership in responsible AI adoption. We are excited to welcome Shell as the RAI Institute’s newest member.” – Var Shankar, Executive Director, RAI Institute
