AUSTIN, TEXAS – December 14, 2023 – Responsible AI Institute (RAI Institute), the non-profit enabling global organizations to harness the power of responsible AI, hosted its annual RAISE 2023 event on December 12. The virtual event recapped a year of valuable achievements and set the stage for future endeavors in responsible AI. This year’s theme was Charting the Future of Responsible AI.
The event featured the RAISE Leadership in Responsible AI Awards, sessions reviewing the achievements of 2023, an outlook for 2024, and a panel discussion on “The Future of Responsible AI: Emerging Trends, Challenges, A Call To Action.”
Leadership in Responsible AI Awards
RAISE 2023 highlighted the Leadership in Responsible AI Awards, honoring pioneers at the forefront of the responsible AI movement and celebrating the accomplishments of the RAI Institute’s large and diverse member base. Award nominees and recipients were chosen based on a public nomination and voting process, as well as direct input from RAI Institute community members.
This year’s esteemed RAISE Leadership in Responsible AI award winners include:
- Outstanding Product or Service Using RAI Institute Framework: Highlighting a product or service exemplifying responsible AI through use of RAI Institute Assessments and Certifications.
- Awarded to: Armilla AI
- Most Inspiring Open Source Project: Celebrating an open-source project enacting responsible AI principles through transparent tools and resources.
- Awarded to: Hugging Face Transformers
- Most Impactful Research Paper: Recognizing cutting-edge published research shaping the responsible AI field through rigorous scholarship.
- Awarded to: WEIRD FAccTs: How Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic is FAccT?
- Outstanding Public Interest Project or Initiative: Highlighting a project or initiative advancing responsible AI through advocacy, governance, ethics or public awareness.
- Awarded to: Health Innovation KSS NHS project on Experimental Responsible Use of Generative AI for Electronic Medicines Information.
- Outstanding Individual: Recognizing an inspirational leader driving responsible AI through research, advocacy, policy or trustworthy frameworks.
- Awarded to: Mophat Okinyi
- Outstanding Organization: Recognizing an organization integrating responsible AI practices to foster trust and benefit society.
- Awarded to: TELUS

RAISE 2023 was designed as both a reflective and forward-looking summit, showcasing the advancements in responsible AI during the past year, the growth of the RAI Institute, and the individuals and organizations driving this progress.
Dynamic Discussions
The panel discussion on “The Future of Responsible AI: Emerging Trends, Challenges, A Call To Action” was moderated by Alyssa Lefaivre Škopac, RAI Institute’s head of global partnerships and growth with speakers Kai Zenner, head of office and digital policy advisor for MEP Axel Voss; Ashley Pantuliano, deputy general counsel of AI at OpenAI; Dr. Paul Dongha, group head of data and AI ethics at Lloyds Banking Group; and Josephine Yam, CEO and co-founder of Skills4Good AI.
This illuminating panel discussion explored emerging trends, challenges and imperatives for responsible AI. Panelists examined frontier technologies like generative AI and discussed risks requiring vigilant governance. They also issued a call to action — how can practitioners, policymakers and the public actively shape an AI future that works for the benefit of humanity?
Manoj Saxena, founder and chairman at RAI Institute, reflected on the Institute’s growth and RAISE 2023, saying, “This has been a pivotal year for the RAI Institute, characterized by remarkable growth in our membership and the incorporation of innovative tools around responsible generative AI. As an action-oriented ‘do tank,’ we are excited to scale our Assessments, Benchmarks and Certifications in the coming year, 2024.”
