Alterra Labs Becomes a Responsible AI Institute Member and Joins the TrustX Health Working Group

AUSTIN, TEXAS — November 4, 2026: The Responsible AI Institute (RAI Institute) today welcomed Alterra Labs as its newest member. As part of its membership, Alterra is joining TrustX Health, the initiative for verifying, deploying and testing agentic AI safely across health and care settings.

Alterra Labs is a frontier research organization focused on safety and alignment for AI in healthcare and the life sciences. Its in-house team of clinicians, scientists, ML researchers and engineers builds realistic simulation environments for clinical, administrative and operational workflows. Alterra uses these environments to evaluate and improve models and agentic systems before they reach patients.

Why TrustX Health exists

RAI Institute launched TrustX Health in December 2025 with Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex, the University of Cambridge’s Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Lab (TRACE) and The King’s Fund. It was the first initiative focused on the scientific, auditable and scalable deployment of agentic AI within the NHS and social care.

The need is growing quickly. The NHS 10 Year Health Plan commits to widespread AI adoption, and health and care organisations are already preparing to use AI agents for documentation, administration, demand prediction and diagnostic support. These systems can work toward a goal with limited supervision. In high-stakes settings, that makes the familiar risks of bias, error, misinformation and drift over time harder to manage.

TrustX Health gives organisations a single front door for this work. It scores and verifies agentic AI systems and evaluates them in real-world settings. It also issues a visible “trusted AI technology” badge, jointly enabled by RAI Institute and Health Innovation KSS, and monitors badged systems so they stay safe as they evolve.

What Alterra brings to the working group

Alterra brings its clinical evaluation expertise to support TrustX Health’s work on scoring and verifying agentic AI. That includes the initiative’s longer-term goal of supporting AI in clinical decision-making, earlier disease detection and better care for patient populations.

Alterra evaluates AI agents the way a clinician would review a colleague’s work. Agents operate inside a full electronic health record built on the same standards real clinical applications use, where they read the chart, document their work and propose orders. Alterra then assesses what the agent actually recorded. This grounds evaluation in real clinical workflows and clinician-written criteria.

Alterra will contribute this experience to the working group’s evaluation and trust-scoring work. It will help shape how TrustX Health measures agent behaviour in clinical settings.

Alterra also brings clinical data and evaluation experience from North America, Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia. This global perspective will support the working group as it builds trust scores that hold across the diverse populations the NHS serves.

“Alterra exists to answer two questions: can agentic AI work reliably in real care settings, and where it doesn’t, how do we train it to get there? We’re joining TrustX Health to bring what we’ve learned evaluating and training AI for real-world deployment in healthcare and life sciences, to the wider conversation on trust and alignment.”
Akash Kapoor, CEO, Alterra Labs

“For agentic AI to earn its place in the NHS, we need evidence of how these systems behave inside real clinical workflows, not just how they perform in a demo. Alterra brings deep clinical evaluation expertise and a global perspective on the populations we serve. That will help TrustX Health build trust scores that clinicians, patients and regulators can rely on as we move toward clinical use cases.”
Prof. Hatim Abdulhussein, CEO, Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex & TrustX Health Lead

What’s next

Alterra will join the TrustX Health working group’s sessions.

Alterra joins a group of pioneering health tech founders shaping TrustX Health, including TORTUS, Newtons Tree, Rapid Health, CLEARnotes, Frontier Health AI and Magic Notes (Beam).

TrustX Health is part of RAI Institute’s wider TrustX program, which in June 2026 expanded to financial services through TrustX for Finance. Across both sectors, the principle is the same: governance must follow what AI systems are allowed to do, not just how they are built.
