Chevron Joins RAI Institute

The RAI Institute welcomes Chevron as its newest member!

As a leading global energy provider, Chevron has helped deliver many of society’s most important advancements. Chevron has an important role to play in meeting growing demand for affordable, reliable, ever-cleaner energy, which continues to enable human progress around the world. For over 140 years, the people of Chevron have risen to meet the most complex challenges of energy. Today, the company is focusing the creativity and ingenuity of its people on solutions that deliver lower carbon energy to a growing world.

Chevron will apply artificial intelligence efficiently, innovatively, and responsibly, leveraging the technology across virtually every aspect of its value chain. For example, its geoscientists use AI and machine learning to create more representative subsurface models that increase confidence for well placement, improve production from those wells, and further optimize operations. Chevron also uses deep learning for computer vision and bioacoustics in efforts to protect native wildlife populations and to advance carbon sequestration techniques to capture and permanently store carbon deep underground in support of greenhouse gas reduction ambitions. Its digital engineers are using AI to design an “industrial metaverse” through virtual replicas of existing facilities in which equipment conditions can be tested, diagnosed, and predicted.

“We aim to be the leader in driving the future of energy with AI, and we will do that responsibly,” said Bill Braun, chief information officer at Chevron. “Joining the Responsible AI Institute is another step we’re taking to safeguard human values with this transformative technology.”

The RAI Institute is excited to partner with Chevron on building responsible AI. Chevron understands that “the most creative solutions emerge in an environment where diverse voices are heard, ideas are considered, bold thinking is valued and people can grow into their fullest potential.”

“Chevron’s guiding principles provide a strong foundation on which to continue developing, implementing, and refining responsible AI systems. As a massive stakeholder in energy resource management and innovation, Chevron is setting the example for others. We are eager to help each other realize our shared ambitions in this partnership.” – Alyssa Lefaivre Škopac, Acting Executive Director, RAI Institute.
