Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer

What does your job entail within your organization?

As the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, I oversee our organization’s ethics, compliance, privacy, regulatory intelligence, and ESG teams, ensuring that we align with both regulatory requirements and our company values. In the AI space, I co-lead our AI governance program alongside our Chief Information Security Officer. We use a divide-and-conquer approach: my focus is on AI policy development, ethical decision-making, and training, while my CISO counterpart concentrates on technical safeguards and security protocols. Together, we aim to create a cohesive strategy that integrates responsible AI principles across our product lifecycle, operations, and decision-making processes. We also lead efforts to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability in how we design and deploy AI systems.

What do you think are the biggest challenges your organization faces related to integrating AI into your business?

One of our biggest challenges is balancing innovation with governance. AI evolves rapidly and everyone wants to operate at breakneck speed. Staying ahead of regulatory changes, emerging risks, and societal expectations requires constant review. Another challenge is embedding responsible AI principles into the fabric of our organization. It’s not just about compliance – it’s about embedding ethics by design into our products and that requires ensuring our culture enables us to meet that challenge. As they say, culture eats compliance. Finally, operationalizing AI governance – ensuring that processes like procurement and the SDLC incorporate our AI policy provisions requires cross-functional collaboration and continuous refinement.

Why must organizations prioritize responsible AI governance and systems in their business?

AI governance allows companies to realize the transformational potential of AI without placing innovation and safety at odds. By emphasizing transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI systems, organizations can contribute to the development of trustworthy, ethical, and future-proofed AI systems. Ultimately, this creates a virtuous cycle of mitigating risk and unintended consequences, complying with dynamic regulations, and fostering stakeholder trust. When implemented successfully, AI governance can also lead to improved decision-making, better efficiency, and more AI-ready data to drive innovation.

What’s a lesson you’ve learned that has shaped your work in responsible AI? Why is this work important to you?

One lesson that stands out is the importance of inclusivity in governance. Early on, I realized that effective AI governance requires diverse perspectives – from technical experts to frontline employees who use these systems. It’s one of the reasons why our model–where our CISO and I partner–works.  This has shaped how we design our policies and training, ensuring they are practical, relatable, and reflect a variety of viewpoints.

This work is deeply important to me because AI has the potential to reshape society, and with that comes a profound responsibility. I’ve personally benefited from medical advances related to AI and in that situation, I was a mom, not a CECO. But I can see as a CECO how, if the AI had gone wrong, it would have deeply affected my child’s health. Ensuring our AI systems are equitable and aligned with human values isn’t just a professional obligation, it’s personal to me.
