TELUS Joins RAI Institute

TELUS is a dynamic, world-leading communications technology company that delivers innovative solutions through 18 million customer connections within Canada and internationally. Along with providing personalized network services including internet, mobility, entertainment, and security to clients across the country, TELUS collaborates with international clients and partners to develop transformative tools that ensure end-to-end customer experience and foster sustainable growth.

TELUS is driven by social purpose, leveraging their global-leading technology and compassion to enable remarkable human outcomes. TELUS is Canada’s largest IT health provider, one of the world’s largest agricultural technology companies, and an advocate for environmentally conscious design.

“We are proud to join the RAI Institute and its community of international thinkers leading the conversation on responsible AI. Guided by our social purpose, we are proud to use our technology, capabilities and leadership in responsible data use, to help build trust in our digital world, and ensure we realize the good that responsible AI can enable,” says Pam Snively, Chief Data & Trust Officer, TELUS.

Across its mobility, health, internet, security as well as agriculture and consumer goods services, TELUS recognizes the importance of responsible AI operating according to guiding principles outlined in the TELUS Trust Model:

  • Accountability through data stewardship, team member training, and awareness of the various relationships clients have with data.
  • Responsible innovation considering outcomes proactively, minimizing harms and maximizing benefits guided by stakeholder input.
  • Transparency around when and how data is used, and how it is governed.

TELUS’s definition of responsible AI aligns with the RAI Institute’s own values: “an approach to AI which considers the impact of the use of AI and incorporates fairness, transparency and explainability.” TELUS believes that responsible AI “is characterized by proactive rather than reactive measures to privacy and ethics, and embeds critical thinking and controls into the design and architecture of machine learning systems,” and we could not agree more.

“We are truly proud to count TELUS among our community of members. TELUS not only brings a wealth of experience, but they also lead by example in publicly showcasing their commitments to responsible AI. As we work with and learn from TELUS, we hope that others will follow their lead and set out their own guiding principles.” Alyssa Lefaivre Škopac, Acting Executive Director, RAI Institute
